Joon Sung Jun is an internationally renowned cellist celebrated for his exceptional artistry and unwavering commitment to musical integrity. He has given countless concerts worldwide, performing solo concertos by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Bloch, Boccherini, Brahms, Dvorak, Elgar, Goltermann, Haydn, Prokofiev, Saint-Saëns, and Tchaikovsky. Jun has collaborated with esteemed orchestras, including the Kazakhstan National Philharmonic, Uol San Symphony, Ma San Symphony, Pusan Symphony, Korean Philharmonic, InCheon Philharmonic, Catholic Boys Town, Symphonieta, and the Korean American Symphony.
His Walt Disney Concert Hall debut was in 2007, and he performed Beethoven's Triple Concerto with Henry Gronnier and Norman Krieger in July 2012. Jun has worked with world-class musicians like Isaac Stern, Yo-Yo Ma, Yefim Bronfman, Itzhak Perlman, and Ivry Gitlis, as well as esteemed conductors such as Zubin Mehta, James Levine, Simon Rattle, Nan Sae Gum, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Throughout his career, Jun has given recitals and chamber concerts across the United States, Europe, and Asia, collaborating with institutions like the Paris Conservatory and the Kazakhstan National Music Conservatory. His international competition career began in 1996 with notable performances at the Dong A International Competition and the Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity, resulting in invitations to perform at prestigious venues and concert tours. His live concerts have been broadcasted on television and radio stations, including PBS, KCET, KBS, MBC, and 91.5 FM KUSC, while his recordings have featured collaborations with Korean singer Eun Mi Lee and appearances in South Korean films and television drama series.
As an educator, Jun has conducted master classes in the United States, Europe, and Asia, teaching and lecturing in chamber music ensembles and literature at institutions such as California State University of Los Angeles, California Institute of the Arts, Pusan University, Dong-I University, Kyung Sung University, and the Kazakhstan National Music Conservatory. His cello students have won numerous competitions and been accepted into prestigious music schools, often receiving scholarships and full scholarships.
In South Korea, Jun is contracted as a soloist and master class instructor for the Prestige Youth Orchestras. He also teaches and performs at major festivals in Italy, France, Kazakhstan, New York, Beverly Hills, and Montecito. He is a member of Trio FUGU, which received an invitation for a residency at the Vietnam National Music Conservatory for the Chamber Music Side by Side project in spring 2013.
Jun completed his studies at the University of Southern California under the guidance of Eleonore Schoenfeld and has continued studying with esteemed musicians like Gerhard Mantel, Ronald Leonard, David Soyer, and Lynn Harrell.
He is the founder of Amici Concert Artists, a non-profit music organization, a board member of Peninsula Symphony, and the Artistic Director of Junior Chamber Music. Jun records movie soundtracks for major studios such as Warner Brothers Motion Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Disney, and Sony Pictures. He has served as a cello professor and chairperson for the instrument at Shepherd University since 2002 and has been a faculty member of California State University of Long Beach since 2007.
